This performative project was made specifically for the vegetal, socio-cultural and urban context of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). On this occasion I designed and produced a bicycle with sidecar that incorporated a small greenhouse where I could install a Dracaena Draco (also known as Drago Canario, icon of the native plant ecosystem), connected by a tube to a mask that covered the face of the cyclist. In this way, the exhaled CO2 was exchanged with the oxygen produced by the plant, thus demonstrating the mutual gaseous feedback cycle that we so often ignore.

The plant-human interaction was direct, and even intimate. But what was important here was not its effectiveness or technical feasibility (as a suitable filter to optimize human respiration), but the aesthetic statement that operated on the symbolic level. The important thing was to frame and make visible the possibility of alternative human involvement in sociocultural adaptation in postnatural environments.



Este proyecto performativo fue realizado específicamente para el contexto vegetal, sociocultural y urbano de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. En esta ocasión diseñé y produje una bicicleta con sidecar que incorporaba un pequeño invernadero donde poder instalar una Dracaena draco (también conocida como Drago canario), icono del ecosistema vegetal autóctono de las Islas Canarias, conectada a su vez por un tubo a una máscara que cubría la cara del ciclista. De esta forma, se producía el intercambio del CO2 exhalado con el oxígeno que producía la planta, haciendo así patente el ciclo de retroalimentación gaseosa mutua que, tan a menudo, ignoramos.

La interacción planta-humano era directa, e incluso íntima. Pero lo importante aquí no era su efectividad o viabilidad técnica (como un filtro adecuado para optimizar la respiración humana), sino la declaración estética que operaba en el plano simbólico. Lo importante era enmarcar, y visibilizar públicamente, la posibilidad de una implicación humana alternativa en la adaptación sociocultural en los entornos postnaturales.
