This interactive installation aims to link the perception we have of plant evolution with its determinant role in the terraforming processes as well as with the commitments we make to AI.

To activate the work, the performative involvement of the public is necessary: as soon as they start walking on the tape, an audiovisual narration is synchronized with their step, thus accompanying the experience with a sequence of images that are the product of hours of training with antagonistic neural networks (ANN), fed with thousands of images of plant taxonomies available on the Internet (from the first cyanobacteria to the latest angiosperms). However, the interpretation of the images offers an incomplete and partial plant imaginary, a monstrous and fragmented imaginary that is, in fact, the legacy of our plant blindness (our cultural inability to see or perceive plants in a shared, co-dependent and symbiotic environment).

"Immersive plant terraforming" requires time and physical commitment: the audiovisual narration of the slow processes of plant evolution stays active as long as the public remains walking on the treadmill, until completing a cycle that, at a normal pace, can last approximately 16 minutes (600 meters of distance). Although it is always possible to speed up the video if the public starts to run or, on the contrary, to slow it down or stop it at any time.

Issues such as biopolitical and performative engagement, or the training of artificial intelligence in matters of inter-species coexistence, come together around this artwork. How can we synchronize, together, humans and non-humans, to imagine another possible future Terraforming?



Esta instalación interactiva quiere vincular la percepción que tenemos de la evolución vegetal con su determinante papel en los procesos de terraformación y también con los compromisos que adquirimos con la IA.

Para activar la obra es necesaria la implicación performativa del público: tan pronto como comienza a caminar sobre la cinta, una narración audiovisual se sincroniza con su paso, acompañando así la experiencia con una secuencia de imágenes que son el resultado de horas de entrenamiento con redes neuronales antagónicas (GAN), alimentada con miles de imágenes de las taxonomias vegetales disponibles en Internet (desde las primeras cianobacterias hasta las últimas angiospermas). Sin embargo, la interpretación de las imágenes ofrece un imaginario vegetal incompleto y parcial, un imaginario monstruoso y fragmentado que es, de hecho, herencia de la nuestra ceguera vegetal (nuestra incapacidad cultural para ver o percibir las plantas en un entorno compartido, codependiente y simbiótico).

“Terraformación vegetal inmersiva” nos exige tiempo y compromiso físico: la narración audiovisual de los lentos procesos de evolución vegetal se mantiene activa siempre y cuando el público siga andando sobre la cinta, hasta completar un ciclo que, a paso normal, puede llegar a durar aproximadamente 16 minutos (y 600 metros de distancia). Aunque siempre es posible acelerar el vídeo si el público comienza a correr o, por el contrario ralentizarlo o detenerlo en cualquier momento.

Asuntos como el compromiso biopolítico y performativo, o el entrenamiento de la inteligencia artificial en asuntos de convivencia interespecie, se dan la mano alrededor de esta obra. ¿Cómo podemos sincronizarnos, juntos, humanos y no-humanos, para imaginar otra futura Terraformación posible?
